COSMIC DATA-BANK PROJECT 1: 761 PLAYERS OF THE NATIONAL HOCKEY LEAGUE Do the world's best hockey players have a common cosmic signature? Does Mercury tend to be in a certain area of the sky when a professional hockey player is born? I am intrigued by that question and many, many others and what follows are the observations I have made during the course of the project. Stay with me, this gets very interesting. During the 2001-2002 hockey season the National Hockey League was composed of 30 professional teams located in Canada and the United States of America, averaging 26 players per team (range 22 to 31), a total of 761 individuals. Birth information was gathered for each player including the day, month, year, city and country of birth. The time of each player's birth was not readily available and so the time for each player was set for noon on the day of birth, halfway through the planetary motions for the day. The birth information was input to Matrix Software's Win*Star Plus program which accurately produced a heliogram for each player. HELIOGRAMS A heliogram is a two dimensional arrangement of the planets around the Sun at the time of the birth of any individual. The heliogram is a heliocentric view of our solar system and includes the positions of all the planets which orbit our sun including Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto. The heliogram is divided into 12 equal sized sectors each of 30° and labeled sectors 1, 2, 3 etc. in a clockwise direction from the East. Each planet in a heliogram has a planetary address; for example, a planetary address of 1215 means that the planet is in sector 12 at the 15th degree. Once the heliograms were prepared for each of the players, the data was noted, put into Microsoft Access format and analyzed. The data collected was as follows:
OBSERVATIONS 1. Month of Birth This graph compares the births by month of the 2001 - 2002 NHL players with those of all Canadians and all citizens of the United States of America over the eleven year period 1966 - 1976. The black-white line shows the NHL players, the blue-red line shows the Canadians and the green-yellow line shows the results for the U.S.A. The vertical axis shows the percentage of total births and the horizontal axis shows the months of the year.
The births per month for Canada and the United States of America are symmetrical to each other; Canada shows a higher percentage from January to June and the United States shows a higher percentage from July to December. The 761 NHL players show a distinctly different pattern than that for Canada or the United States with the highest percentage of births in January and February and the lowest in September and November. The population data for Canada and the United States of America was gathered from their respective Departments of Vital Statistics. Because the months of the year do not have the same number of days in them, a more useful view is obtained if one looks at the number of births per 30° sector of the heliogram. This is exactly what I have done and the resulting graph is shown below.
The graph shows the distribution of births according to the sector in which the Sun and Earth were located for all the NHL players. The Sun and Earth are always opposite to each other in the sectors. The relationship between the sectors and the seasons are shown below with the percentage of NHL players born in that season shown in brackets.
* These dates may vary slightly dependent upon the year. The highest percentage of births amongst NHL players occurred when the sun was in the Winter and Spring sectors. The smallest percentage of NHL player births occurred during the Autumn season. The Winter + Spring seasons, sectors 10, 11, 12, 1, 2, and 3, accounts for 59% of the NHL players while the Autumn season accounts for 19%. 2. Year of Birth There are 761 players in the database. The oldest player was born in 1960 and the youngest was born in 1983. The breakdown is shown below.
